Our Afternoon at Laugarvatn Fontana Spa

Laugarvatn Fontana is a Spa nestled on the shores of lake Laugarvatn and is a can’t miss on your way to exploring the Golden Circle. Fontana is located one hour (76 km or 47 miles) from Reykjavik and a stones throw away from highway 37, en route to Geysir and Strokkur along the Golden Circle.

Upon arrival we were welcomed by smiling staff and our first glimpse of the geothermal baths and several rejuvenated guests enjoying a beer in the cafe.  After a quick mandatory rinse, it was time to experience the natural energy and solitude that made Iceland one of our priority destinations.

With your choice of geothermal baths, steam saunas or walking the warm shores of Lake Laugarvatn, one can’t help but feel calmingly alone.

Stone crafted pools with varying temperatures are designed to cycle the body between hot, warm and cool states of relaxation.

Feeling hungry and refreshed, Fontana cafe can also be accessed from the pools via an easy to access ordering window.  Nothing made us feel more Icelandic than relaxing in the geothermal waters with a cold beverage and a sharing travel stories with several locals, who names I dare not attempt to spell.

It’s hard to understand why Laugarvatn Fontana wasn’t crawling with tourists, or even mentioned by our hotel staff… But than again, maybe the locals enjoy keeping this stop close to their own and for that I can’t blame them.
