Abu Dhabi Desert Safari

Abu Dhabi is said to have the best dunes and Safari tours in the UAE. I suppose we have no grounds for comparison, but I don’t see how it can get any better than this.  Our driver picked us up promptly at 3:00 pm and we were off with 3 other guests from our hotel. Dressed to the T and blasting Arabic tunes, we knew we were in for an amazing night. We headed 45 minutes south of Abu Dhabi in a Toyota Land cruiser with a goal of bashing some dunes. Before hitting the sand, we stopped and got a close introduction to camels and their importance to the regions history.  The hair feels similar to that of horse, but a lot drier and reminding us of a dusty floor mat.

All this time, the sound of deflating tired was getting us excited for the off-road adventure ahead. It’s one thing to be in a dune buggy or a similar sand altered vehicle, but a stock cruiser was quite the experience. The car rocked and rattled from side to side as we dangerously sped in a caravan of sand chariots. Honestly, we tailed each other with countless near collisions. The driver laughed while smiling and blasting Arabic tunes. As for the passengers, well, we just thankful for the dual overhead hands and working seat belts.

As we approached our desert hideaway, we saw the camels waiting for us. Kim and I were easily the most excited people in the entire camp. Don’t believe me? Just ask the little kids we sprinted past to secure our spot as the camps first riders.

Cushions were perfectly placed around a fire pit and sparking hookahs called our name.  We took turns passing the hose within our small group of 5 and watched the sun set until the show lights flashed and it was time for the belly dancer.

Dinner was served buffet style and was surprisingly very good. We had options of 2 fresh salsas, rices with meats, pita breads with hummus, beef skewers and even spicy chicken legs/wings. On our way out we spotted the customary outfits and convinced our driver to help us with the clothing. We saw no other people try the clothes on, although it was included in the tour. It was a night we’ll surely never forget and an ABSOLUTE must do if you ever visit Abu Dhabi.

Side note – because we tried on the clothing we were the last car to leave and our driver wasn’t having it. Now, stuffed from dinner and pitch black, he raced through the dunes in an effort to make up time. We passed several cars in the sand and every other car once we hit the pavement. It was great!
